Lesson 1: Program, Site, Set Up

Lesson Overview

At the point students start working in Autodesk® Project Vasari they should already have a few sketches of ideas for the campus. They should have a conceptual basis for the design, notebook sketches and ideas. Now is the time to bring the project into Project Vasari to start building different model iterations and test them with the analysis tools. To do so, start with a new project file. Click New under Projects to open a new Autodesk® Revit® Architecture (.rvt) project file. This file will open natively in Revit Architecture software as well.  Project templates can also be opened, and custom templates can be saved with predefined project information, settings, families, graphics settings, etc.

In this lesson, students explore basics techniques for using Project Vasari to set up a project location. They will learn how to:

  • Import CAD/Drafting
  • Model Context information
  • Import Raster Images

Objectives

After completing this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Set a location for the site and choose a local weather station.
  • Import AutoCAD® and other CAD data.
  • Import reference raster images for design.
  • Use a Google Maps™ image underlay.

Key Terms

Key Term Definition

Weather Data

Weather Data files contain aggregate weather, ecology, and atmospheric data for a specific region. These files are used to inform analyses and studies of a project in a specific location

Reference Planes

Use the Reference Plane tool to draw reference planes to use as a guideline in your design. Reference planes are an integral part of family creation.

Building Information Modeling (BIM)

BIM is a method for creating and maintaining a building’s design and associated information over the course of its lifetime. This unit fits into the preliminary design process of a building and can easily integrate into a full BIM workflow.

Performance Based Design

Using analysis of a building’s performance, digital or post-construction, to inform the next stage of the design process using previous results.
